The Art of the Graphic Novel

stripe

Graphic novels continue to explode in popularity. The St. Charles Public Library started actively developing a collection geared to adults in 2006, in addition to the graphic novel collection in the Young Adult Department. Adult fiction graphic novels, which are generally stand alone stories told through illustrations, all have the call number 741.5 There also are an increasing number of nonfiction books published in this format. Although not novels in the traditional sense, they are commonly referred to as graphic novels due to their graphic format. In our collection, these books are shelved in the subject area that they cover. The span of call numbers below gives some feel for the wide range of topics covered. (Hint: If you are searching for a graphic novel on a particular subject, try entering the subject and adding “comic books, strips, etc.” before clicking on subject.
