Teacher Loan Service
Do you need books to go along with the themes your class will be working on this month? The Youth Services staff is happy to assist you in selecting materials for your classroom. Simply contact us with the topics of your choice at least 5 business days before you would like to pick up your loan. We will select materials, check them out, and place them in a convenient bag to be picked up by you. Items are available for up to a 5-week loan.
You may request a Teacher Loan by completing the form on our website, e-mailing Youth Services, contacting Youth Services by phone at 630-584-9390, or stopping by the ASK ME Desk. If your themes are planned for the year, you can set up a series of monthly bag exchanges.
Every Child Ready to Read Workshops
The Library periodically offers this early literacy workshop in summer, fall and winter. Join us to learn about the current research on early literacy and brain development, which indicates that it is never too early to prepare children for success as readers. The workshop will demonstrate techniques to help develop pre-reading skills in children, as well as easy ways to include early literacy skills in your classroom activities. Additionally, suggestions for age-appropriate books and resources will be offered. Workshop dates and registration information can be found in Discover Your Library!
Stop by the Library to explore our preschool area enhanced with early literacy activities. Literacy Lane is an interactive area designed to foster the early literacy skills children need to acquire to be successful as they learn to read. Literacy Lane includes museum-quality panels featuring activities designed for parents/ caregivers and children to interact with together, a saltwater aquarium and seating area. While using a panel to measure, compare and talk about how many inches, mice or keys high each child is, families are also learning about the simple, yet key practices of early literacy: talking, singing, reading, writing and playing. Technology is also present in the area which features iPads with developmentally-targeted literacy apps and an AWE touchscreen Early Literacy Station featuring more than 60 educational programs designed for children ages 2 - 8 including: Reader Rabbit, Kid Pix 3D and JumpStart Spanish.
