The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph
Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a
division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished
American picture book for children.1

The Monarch Award: Illinois' K-3 Children's Choice Award will be presented
annually to the author and/or illustrator of the book voted as their favorite
by students in Kindergarten through Grade Three in participating Illinois
schools or public libraries. The Monarch is sponsored by the Illinois School
Library Media Association.3

The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John
Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to
Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of
the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

The Rebecca Caudill Young Readers' Book Award was developed to encourage children
and young adults to read for personal satisfaction. It is an Illinois award for
outstanding literature for young people and is sponsored by the Illinois Reading
Council, the Illinois School Library Media Association, and the Illinois
Association of Teachers of English.6
