Peter spends a summer in Greenland with his parents who are studying global warming, among other things. Finally, Peter gets to share in his parents' adventures. Peter, however, has visions which are exciting, frightening, and unexplainable. In a parallel story, Thea belongs to a culture which lives entirely below the surface of Greenland. Thea believes that her ancestors didn't intend for them to stay below the ice forever. She is secretly given a map which shows the way to get to the surface. Both Peter's and Thea's lives are changed forever when they meet by chance.
