The Hardy boys are proud of their famous detective father, and when their best friend's car is stolen, they seize the chance to solve their first case. Then another friend's father is arrested for stealing valuables from his employer, and the boys think the car thief might be the real culprit in the case. Will they solve the mystery in time to clear an innocent man? Will they find the stolen treasure? Readers will enjoy this first book in the Hardy Boys Mystery series for its fast, action-packed pace and its satisfying resolution. The old-fashioned slang is an amusing bonus.

Henry Smith's father told him that if you build your house far away from Trouble then Trouble will never find you. But that wasn't true. Henry's older brother, Franklin, was hit and seriously injured, by a truck driven by a Cambodian boy, Chay Chouan. Racial tensions at school and in the town flared. Henry's sister, Louisa, hardly ever comes out of her room. His parents and his world are falling apart. Henry does the only thing he can think of, climb Mt. Katahdin, which he and Franklin had been planning to do. So begins an incredible journey of danger, adventure, self-discovery and grace.

Shana and Cody are outdoor kids, and are not adjusting well to their new life in the suburbs, after their father leaves the family. The only bright spot in their lives is the cabin, near a river, that they convince their mom to let them stay at, unsupervised, during the summer. Of course, trouble finds them in the form of a crotchety, old, forest ranger bent on protecting the river. They eventually form a friendship with the old man, and he teaches Cody about the river, where the trout spawn, where the best places to fish are, and even how to navigate the treacherous white waters by canoe. Just why does he teach him these things?
