To save the Jews in 1580 Prague, Rabbi Loew brings to life The Golem; a giant man of living clay. This creature protects the Jews from persecution due to a lie - that they have mixed the blood of Christian children with their matzoh. The Golem catches those responsible, then grows ever larger when the frustrated enemies of the Jews storm their ghetto. Elaborate cut-paper illustrations bring the legend to life.

Although The Headless Horseman isn't strictly folklore, the story sets the tone for this eerie collection of stories. Classic folk tales, such as The Bunyip and The Brave Little Tailor, are included, along with stories from lesser-know origins, such as The Shadow, from Denmark, about a shadow that gradually takes over the life of its human, and Abena and the Python, a West African tale about a vain young woman who mistakenly marries a snake.
