Mrs. Oliniski returns to teaching 6th grade after becoming paralyzed in an automobile accident. One of her most difficult assignments is to pick four members from her class for the annual academic bowl. How she selects the very different students, who call themselves the Souls, is a mystery, or - did they pick her? Get ready to meet Noah, who was the best man at the wedding of Ethan's grandmother to Nadia's grandfather. Then there is Julian, half Eastern Indian, who practices magic and starts the events in motion by inviting them to a tea party. This is a funny, heartwarming tale about the Souls, whose innate compassion brings them together to help their teacher and in the process, help each other and themselves.

This book is narrated by Joey, a mixed-breed horse, thoroughbred and draft horse. His first memory is of an auction, when he was sold to a farmer. The farmer's son, Bert, knows that Joey is HIS horse, and trains him to be a runner and field horse. When World War I breaks out, Bert's father sells Joey to the British Armed Forces. Distraught, Bert vows that he will enlist and follow Joey as soon as he is old enough. The story follows Joey through his experiences as a war horse, first with the British and then with the Germans, as he is captured as a spoil of war. Will Joey survive the war and will Bert be able to find him?
