What a plan Fox has for tasting the tantalizing grapes hanging from a vine high in a tree. He keeps repeating 'I am silly. Clever. Smart. After all, I am a fox.' Margie Palatini and Barry Moser give an ingenious and hilarious twist to Aesop's fable, 'The Fox and the Grapes.' Many animals are recruited to help him get the grapes with a One, Two, Three plan.

The fox was out smarted because he always gave directions. Listening can be just as important. A beautifully illustrated book with a good moral.

Jack's journal begins: I don't want to because boys don't write poetry. Girls do. But as Jack learns through others' poetry, he finds that he can say so much in 'short lines' especially about that dog he loved.

Lulu the Big Little Chick

Paulette Bogan (2009), 32 pages
Audience: Preschool - 2nd Grade
Category: Animal, Fiction, Picture Books

Winner of the 2010 Children's Choice Book Award for Kindergarten to Second Grade, Lulu the Big Little Chick introduces us to Lulu, a young chick weary of being told she's too small to do anything she wants to do. When her mother says, 'Lulu, you are too little to go very far away from me,' this is the final straw, and Lulu decides to venture out into the wide world by herself. As she begins her journey to 'far, far away' she encounters animals who are convinced she's not big enough to be on her own. Can Lulu prove herself to everyone who says she's too little to do what she wants? This is a great choice for newly independent readers, but also makes an entertaining read-aloud pick for children not yet reading on their own.

Manana Iguana

Ann Whitford Paul (2004), 32 pages

Category: Animal, Fiction, Humor, Picture Books

I loved the story of The Little Red Hen when I was a child, and this story puts a whole new twist on the old fable. Follow Iguana as she tries to get her friends to help her prepare for a great fiesta (party) on sabado (Saturday). With each new day, Iguana becomes more frustrated with her friends' excuses. Conejo (co Nay ho - Rabbit) is much too fast to help, Tortuga (tor TU gah - tortoise) is much too slow, and Culebra (cu Lay brah - snake) will have to try to grow arms tonight so that maybe he can help Iguana manana. Sabado arrives, and the fiesta begins, but Iguana whips her tail around in angry circles when her friends think they can attend the party. The lazy friends can only watch from afar as Iguana and her party guests enjoy their evening. But the story is far from over: read Manana, Iguana to see what her friends do to surprise Iguana on domingo (Sunday).
