Blue Sea

Robert Kalan (1979), 24 pages
Illustrated by Donald Crews
Audience: Preschool - Preschool
Category: Animal, Picture Books

A little fish is alone in the blue sea. The little fish is followed by a big fish, which is followed by bigger fish, followed by the biggest fish. Swim little fish! Each fish is stopped in turn by progressively smaller holes until little fish escapes alone into the blue sea. This concept book of comparative words is illustrated by Donald Crews in bright, simple colors. It would be great for reading over again and encouraging little ones to 'read' along, or to discuss the action in the pictures.

When the children all go back to school, the barnyard animals are bored. They venture into town, and seeing the smiling faces coming from the library building, they decide to take a look. First, the horse clip-clops in and politely asks for something to do, but the librarian doesn't understand what he says. One by one, each animal enters and tries to communicate with the librarian, but she doesn't understand until the hen comes in, saying 'Book! Book!' With a few books, the animals return to the farm and enjoy reading the books together. This lighthearted story is a fun way to introduce the idea of a library.
