Five very unusual short stories perfect for making you think and be just a little bit on edge - all by the award-winning Avi. Some are scary, some are funny, but all are tales of transformation. My favorite was about a boy who changes places with a cat. He's bored with school and wants the cats' easy life of napping all day. But what happens when he wants to become himself again and cat doesn't want to be a cat anymore? A wonderful example of 'be careful what you wish for'.

When T. J. is sent to spend several weeks with her elderly Auntie Onion and Uncle Will in Santa Cruz, California, she is expecting a quiet, boring visit. If nothing else, she can work on the mystery novel she is writing with her friend. Then, on the first morning of her visit, she hears a fog horn calling her name! When her aunt and uncle tell her there is no fog horn any more, T.J. decides to go exploring. That is when she meets the boy. He is sitting on a rock, soaking wet, and speaks with an Australian accent. He tells her that he was in a shipwreck. As soon as the fog disappears, the boy disappears. The next time T.J. meets him, he tells her more of his story, and T.J. realizes that she is talking to a ghost. To return to where he belongs, he needs to find a gold ring he lost during the wreck. T.J. promises to help him. Will they find the ring? Will T.J. write the next great mystery novel?

Everyone knows the tale of Hansel & Gretel but this one is quite different and certainly reads as the title forecasts, as dark and Grimm. Yes, the familiar story is there but the twists and turns are most unexpected and take you down paths that are somewhat reminiscent of other Grimm tales. Quirky, scary and funny, this tale has deep truths and remarkable vision into the heart and soul of people of all ages.
Companion book: In a Glass Grimmly with another title to be released in October 2013.
