Hal Fenton, a boy with very wealthy parents, has just about everything except the thing he wants most, a dog. Hal believes his wish has finally come true when his father lets him pick out a pup for his 10th birthday. His joy turns to misery and anger when he finds out that the dog, Fleck, is only rented for the weekend and is not his to keep. Hal decides to steal Fleck back from the pet store and run away with him to his grandparents' house in Northumberland. As Hal and Fleck set out on their long journey from London, they are joined by dog lover, Pippa and four more dogs. Hal's parents offer a huge reward for Hal's safe return and so the group ends up traveling on foot as they try to avoid capture by a bumbling private detective and various other money hungry characters. The group also encounter great kindness and help on their long journey which involves side excursions to a circus, an orphanage, a monastery and a sheep farm. This is an exciting adventure told with great humor that has a delightfully satisfying outcome that will especially appeal to all dog lovers.
