Cinder-Eyed Cats

A child flies a sailboat to a lush island where he meets five cinder-eyed wildcats. As night time falls, they begin to play together, and all the fish emerge from the sea to cavort with the boy and the cats. Each page is filled with action as the creatures swirl about in the air. Many gorgeous illustrations portray play and movement, until morning comes as the creatures return to the sea. Then all is quiet, and the boy returns in his boat as the cinder-eyed cats give him an affectionate goodbye. The story is reminiscent of Where the Wild Things Are, but with less defiance, and more grace, mystery, and play.
