Girls Take Over
Audience: 4th Grade - 6th Grade
The Malloy girls and the Hatford boys are in constant competition. One of the Malloy girls tries out for the previously all-male baseball team, and another is competing with one of the boys in the spelling bee. They're all racing to see whose bottle (filled with contact information) will travel the furthest down the river. Will it be the boys or the girls who come out on top this time? Look for other books about the Hatford boys and the Malloy girls (this is the eighth book in the series featuring these characters). The Boys Start the War is book one.

Summer is Gloriana Hemphill's favorite time of year. She loves going to the Hanging Moss community pool every day. She loves playing card games with her sister, Jesslyn. She especially loves the 4th of July with the parade, the fireworks and the pool party for her July 4th birthday. But in the summer of 1964, everything seems to change. Her sister doesn't seem to want to play with her at all. All she has time for are the girls in the pep squad and hanging around with a new boy in town. Then, they close the swimming pool, 'for repairs,' they say even though there is nothing wrong with it. Could it be because of the freedom fighters that have come down from up north threatening to change the way things have always been in this southern town? Can Glory have any kind of birthday without her pool party? A lot of things change in Hanging Moss during the summer of 1964, including Gloriana.
