It's 1901, and President McKinley has been shot. His vice president, Theodore Roosevelt, is on vacation, and awaits news about McKinley's survival. McKinley dies, and Teddy Roosevelt becomes president. His family isn't sure what their lives will be like now. Ethel Roosevelt, his 10-year-old daughter, is especially concerned about leaving their Long Island home, and living in the White House. They move to the White House, and find it an old, smelly, run-down building. It does, though, have big rooms for roller skating in the house, and riding their bikes down the hallway. As the President's daughter, Ethel is sent to an exclusive boarding school in Washington. She's miserable there, and finds the President's family is always under the magnifying glass about what they do, and say. Read this book, and find out what adventures Ethel had in the White House!

Miri's father won't let her work in the quarry, and she thinks it's because she's so small. She would love to prove to him that she's capable, but a decree from the king saying that the prince's new bride will come from Mount Eskel changes her life. All eligible girls must attend an academy to prepare them to be princesses. Then the prince will choose his favorite. Princess Academy is a dreary place run by an unpleasant woman. Miri is happy for the education but dislikes the harsh rules and the competition which develops among the girls. She is not sure whether she would like to be princess or stay on the mountain and continue her growing friendship with Peder. When the lives of the girls at the academy are in danger, it's up to Miri to save them.
