It's 1856. Twelve-year-old Charlotte, and her widowed father, are members of a Welsh handcart company on the Mormon Trail. Charlotte's mother was the first of the family to convert to Mormonism, but she died in childbirth, leaving Charlotte, and her father, to make their way without her to Zion. Shortly after arriving in America, one in their company dies in childbirth, and Charlotte, without thinking, volunteers to care for the infant, who she names Rose. Charlotte walks the road from childhood to womanhood, and learns that there is a good deal more to caring for a baby than she thought. Many of the incidents in this story are taken from history, researched from the story of Cannon's own ancestors.
