Everyone hopes their birthday wish will come true. Igraine's brother wants to be a magician like their parents. He could care less about knights and all those codes of chivalry. But that is exactly what Igraine wants, dreams, and wishes for - to be the best knight ever. Never mind that she is a girl and only eleven, almost twelve. Everything changes on her birthday - she gets a very special suit of armor, her parents become pigs when a spell is said wrong, and then the castle comes under siege. Her brother Albert takes charge, even though his magic skills are still in the beginner's stage, and Igraine is sent on a mission to retrieve giant's hair to reverse the spell on their parents. Igraine's adventures are full of challenges that stretch her abilities. Will she fulfill her quest and return home in time for a happy ending?

For as long as she can remember, twelve-year-old Meggie, and her father have been on the run, often fleeing in the middle of the night. Meggie learns that her father, who repairs, and binds books for a living, has a secret. He can 'read' fictional characters to life, and one of those characters is after them. This is book one of the Inkheart trilogy. If you like this, look for Inkspell and Inkdeath.

Jack and the Beanstalk

E. Nesbit (2006), 48 pages
Illustrated by Matt Tavares
Audience: Preschool - 4th Grade
Category: Adventure, Fantasy, Folklore, Picture Books

'Jack and the Beanstalk' by E. Nesbit is a rich retelling of the traditional Grimm's fairy tale, 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. This author cleverly weaves this story to include the reader in the adventures of a foolish boy who sells his family's only procession, a cow, for a handful of beautiful beans. The plot is predictable but the enriched story and illustrations spin a magic all their own.

Jay: Ninja of Lightning

Sensai Wu writes in his journal, 'Heroes who can find humor in even the most terrifying situations are often the ones most able to survive.' This is one of the things that make Jay so valuable to the Ninja team. He is always quick with a joke, but he can also cook and he is a talented inventor (even if his inventions don't always work). Of course, like all the ninja, he is skilled in spinjitzu. In this story, Jay and Kai leave the Ninjago camp and go into a nearby town to get supplies. Once in town, they find the store keeper in trouble and themselves the prime suspects in a murder attempt. Can Jay's sense of humor and his skill at inventing save them from the angry and suspicious townspeople? This is one of four early chapter books which each focus on a different Ninjago character.
