Pasha and Lisette live in the very little village of Miersk. Pasha's grandfather, Ivan, who has four eyebrows, is the town leader. Rumor abounds that the Blood Prince, a wolf who drinks men's blood, is closing in on the village. One day, Pasha, and Lisette, are sitting and talking by the river when the Firebird rises up out of the bushes on the other side. They forget to snatch a tail feather, which can bring untold riches. Everyone agrees that this is an omen, possibly about the Blood prince. Only Baba Yaga, a witch with iron teeth who lives in a house on chicken legs, can read the omen. Since everyone is afraid of Baba Yaga, Pasha and Lisette set out to find the old witch, and solve the mystery.

'East' is one of my favorite fantasy - adventure books. It is a retelling of the Norse folktale 'East of the Sun, West of the Moon'. Edith Pattou is quite imaginative in her interpretation of the old story. Each chapter in this book is told from a different perspective. Most often, it is from the perspective of the main character Rose, the White Bear or the Troll Queen. Rose accompanies the White Bear to his palace in exchange for health and prosperity for her family. Rose immediately sees that there is more than meets the eye in the mysterious palace. When Rose betrays the trust of the White Bear and reveals that he is a prince under an enchantment, she must rescue him from the Troll Queen. Rose vows to seek out the prince at the Troll Queen's palace that lies East of the sun and West of the moon. Will she find him in time; can she break the enchantment that keeps him?
