Dori Hillestad Butler (2003), 218 pages
Illustrated by Paul Casale
Audience: 6th Grade - 8th Grade
Baseball has always been central in Joelle's life, and she has a talent for the sport. Having played on her school's baseball team in Minneapolis, Joelle expects the same when she moves to Greendale, Iowa. When she wants to try out, however, she's told that girls play only softball in this town. Softball is considered the equivalent of baseball for girls. Yet, Joelle knows that baseball is a different sport, a sport she's not willing to quit. She tries every avenue to be allowed to play, even going to the school administration and writing a letter to the paper. When nothing seems to work, Joelle has a big idea. Can she beat the obstacles to find herself a place in the game of baseball?
