Hungry Coat: A Tale from Turkey

Demi (2004), 40 pages
Illustrated by Demi
Audience: K - 4th Grade
Nasrettin Hoca was a storyteller, teacher and humorist in Turkey in the 1200's A.D. This is one of the stories told about him. Nasrettin Hoca went to a fancy dinner party wearing old worn-out clothes because he did not have time to change. The other guests would not talk to him and the servers would not give him food. He snuck out to go home, get cleaned up and put on his fanciest coat and turban. When he went back to the party in his finery, he was greeted enthusiastically and fed the finest food. Why did he put all of the food inside his coat? Demi's lavish illustrations make the story come alive.
