Tony Stark, the genius inventor and billionaire, reveals himself as Iron Man after a spectacular jump from an airplane that lands him directly in the Stark Expo. The Expo is where the best and brightest minds from around the world gather and share ideas and new technologies. Ivan Vanko is watching the telecast and plots revenge because he believes Iron Man to be his father's invention and has the blueprints to prove it.
Many predicaments are ahead of Tony. The palladium power source to the Iron Man suit is poisoning him, the military wants the secrets of the suit to use as a defense weapon, and Ivan develops his own powerful suit to destroy him. In an all-out battle between good and evil, can Tony fend off a copy of Iron Man called War Machine, drones modeled after each branch of the military, and Ivan suited as Whiplash?
