Dogku

Andrew Clements (2007), 40 pages
Illustrated by Tim Bowers
Audience: Preschool - 4th Grade
Category: Animal, Poetry
Andrew Clements writes in his author's note, 'Adorable dog + Haiku = Dogku. Simple.' And it is just that simple. A stray dog shows up on the back porch of a family's home. Food, a bath, a name, and playtime follow. Then, they hold the family meeting. Will Mooch have a forever home? Clements uses the form of haiku to tell Mooch's story. In his own words, 'Choosing a small container can help you pick the perfect words and arrange them just right.' These words are, 'just right.' One last haiku from the author: An idea knocks: I open, think, write, and smile. And then it's your turn.
