When Wren and Darra are eight years old, Darra's father stole a minivan that belonged to Wren's mother. Wren's mother was paying for gas while Wren was in the van listening to the radio. Wren hides so that Darra's father doesn't see her and then ends up locked in their garage. This novel in verse alternates between how each girl experienced the carnapping in such a way that the reader can feel empathy for both Darra and Wren. Both girls end up attending the same summer camp. Will the awkwardness that they feel towards one another ever go away?
