Pipaluk And The Whales

John Himmelman (2002), 32 pages
Audience: Preschool - 3rd Grade
Pipaluk was out with her father on her first hunting trip. Snuggled under the furs piled high in the dog sled and heading for home, Pipaluk gazed at the night sky as the sled pulled her through the Arctic night. All of a sudden, the dogs led them to the edge of a savssat (ice hole). There, they saw an amazing yet terrible sight. Thousands of Beluga Whales were caught in the ice, without a means of escape. The Arctic Sea had closed in around them and they would all starve if they could not find their way out of the hole into the sea. With the help of the village people, an icebreaker, and a child's song, the whales are led to safety. 'Pipaluk and the Whales' by John Himmelman is a tender and inspirational story of a people's love and respect for their fellow creatures.
