Molly, 13, and Colleen, 19, find themselves with just eighteen dollars after paying the bills after the death of their once well-to-do father in Illinois. Action had to be taken and it was in the form of applying to work for the Harvey House chain of restaurants even though Molly was only 13 and the age to work was 18. Colleen helped dress Molly to look 18 and off they went to Chicago where they were hired and sent to Raton, New Mexico. They learned how to accomplish what was expected of Harvey Girls who were paid well, furnished uniforms and a place to sleep, but Molly always wanted to go back to Streator, IL so she made plans for Colleen to marry a Chicago salesman to accomplish this act. Will Molly's schemes work to get her back to her old life or will she stay out West with her new-found friends? This book explores a little known part of women's history as well as showing the racism and prejudice that existed in the West. Enjoy this thoroughly charming book.
