It's the 1930's, and after her father loses his job twelve-year-old Rachel must move from the city to a dilapidated house out in the country. Times are hard for everyone during the Great Depression. Rachel and her two younger siblings must stay by themselves while their father travels, looking for work. Will they have enough money for the rent after her sister buys some special paint? The days stretch on; what will they eat until their father returns? Rachel gains strength throughout the story by writing letters to her beloved friend Miss Mitzi back in the city.
