Annie was born in 1860, to Jacob and Susan Moses, just after they left everything they knew in Pennsylvania and moved their family by wagon to Ohio. When Annie was just six, her father died and her mother was left to support the family of seven children. Annie took up shooting game to help out and soon became an expert. At the age of 16, she supported her family with her rifle, selling the game she shot to a local hotel. Three years later, the hotel owner backed her in a shooting match against Frank Butler, a renowned marksman. As Annie put it, she won the match and a husband. Thus, her show career began. Annie Oakley became a woman whose inborn talent led her to a career performing all over the United States and in Europe. She rubbed shoulders with many of the famous and royal people of the time.
