As a child, Thomas Gallaudet suffered from weakness, and this isolated him from the other kids. As a young adult, he had compassion for other people who were left out or different from other people. This led him to try to teach a young girl who couldn't hear or speak, at a time when there was no system of formal education for the deaf in the United States. Through his efforts to teach her, he ended up as the principal of the first school for the deaf in our nation, a school which became the birthplace of American Sign Language. Read this inspiring story of how he overcame his challenges in order to make a difference for others.
