Prince of Tennis, Volume 1

Takeshi Konomi (2004), 192 pages
Illustrated by Takeshi Konomi
Audience: 5th Grade - 8th Grade
Category: Graphic Novel
Ryoma Echizen is a 12-year-old 7th grader who is very good (excellent) at playing tennis. His father was a champion tennis player until he was injured. Now having just moved back to Japan, Ryoma decides to sign up for the 16 and under tennis competition. His character is developed through his interactions with other 7th graders and older players on the high school team. He has spunk, fight and occasional humor even though he is a boy of few words. Must he win every match? The manga and anime are acceptable even though some translation is missing. Be sure to read this as intended- from the back to the front and right to left. Through the series, there are eight other teams that play tennis with the Seigaku team. There is some minor swearing in the conversations.
