20 Years Later

E. J. Newman (2011), 313 pages
Audience: 6th Grade - 8th Grade
This is the story of Zane, who lives in London twenty years after a mysterious virus has wiped out almost all of the population. Those who still live are people who were somehow immune to it. The city has descended to a pre-Industrial Revolution existence and is ruled by gangs, each of whom defends their territory to the death. Zane and his mother live in a house near the Bloomsbury gang territory. Since they do not belong to a gang, they also have dealings with the gang led by the Red Lady. As part of a deal, the Red Lady sends Luthor to train Zane to hunt. Luthor arrives, accompanied by his daughter, Erin. Zane meets Titus after Titus and his sister Lyssa are attacked by the Bloomsbury Boys and Lyssa mysteriously disappears. These three, Zane, Erin and Titus, become friends and realize they must do something to combat the Unders, who took Lyssa, and are performing painful operations on her and other children. To do anything, they must make the rival gangs work together to help. How can they succeed against such odds? This is the beginning of a planned trilogy.
