Audience: 5th Grade - 8th Grade
The first thing Hap remembers is waking up blindfolded in a cave. Soon a man and two companions come in looking for something. It soon becomes clear that the something they were sent for is Hap. The only clue to Hap's identity and origins are found in a note that Hap is instructed to give to this man, Lord Umber and which promptly vanishes in a flash of fire. Before any of them can figure out just what is happening, they find themselves running from a monstrous worm that is intent on eating them. The foursome encounter magic, adventure and danger at every turn. Hap slowly discovers things about himself, he can see in the dark, he can leap great distances and he doesn't need sleep. At the same time, he is drawn to and fascinated by the mysterious Lord Umber who seems to come from another world altogether, one where instead of magic, they have wonders such as printing presses and computers. If you like fast-paced adventure and puzzles to figure out, you will enjoy this first book in the series The Books of Umber.
