Lucy and the Bully
Audience: Preschool - 2nd Grade
Lucy is good at art, but the class bully named Tommy targets her. Tommy steps on her model, rips books, and breaks her pencils. The teacher is unaware and Lucy doesn't want to tell her mother what is happening. Finally, she lets her mother know, and Tommy gets into trouble. At the end of the story, Lucy and a repentant Tommy become friends. This gentle story would be a good choice to teach younger children about bullying. The characters are all animals (Lucy is a lamb, Tommy is a little bull, the teacher is a goose) which lessens the immediacy of the situation while still conveying the important message that when bullied, children need to speak up and that parents and authorities can be trusted to take care of a situation.
