It was unseasonably warm on the East Coast on March 10, 1888, enough so that a local hardware store buyer became the laugh of the town when an article appeared about him in the newspaper revealing his purchase of 3,000 snow shovels. Little did anyone know that a blizzard so unrelenting was coming that not only would the snow shovels sell out, but trains would be halted, many would freeze to death within feet of shelter and the everyday functions of cities would halt completely. This is the story of the blizzard that took the world by storm and changed the way cities handle disasters, including the personal stories of many real people caught in the midst of the disaster.
