In seventeenth-century England, young Philip Marsham's life is turned upside down, when a terrible accident forces him to flee London, in fear of his life. He joins the crew of the Rose of Devon, a dark frigate bound for Newfoundland. When his ship is taken over by pirates, he is forced to become a member of their crew. Now a pirate, only the hangman is waiting for him to return to England.
This won the Newbery Medal in 1924.
