Penderwicks: A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy

Jeanne Birdsall (2006), 262 pages
Audience: 4th Grade - 7th Grade
Since before their mother died, the Penderwicks have always rented a cottage on Cape Cod each summer for three weeks. This summer, they find out that their cottage has been sold and there appears to be nowhere for them to go. Then, their father finds a place called Arundel. So the four girls, Rosalind, the practical, oldest sister, Skye, the smart one, Jane, who wrote books, and Batty, the shy, littlest one, pack themselves up and go. Of course, they can not forget Hound, their faithful dog. They are certainly not prepared for the beautiful estate that stands at the address given to their father, nor are they disappointed by the cottage guest house it turns out that they have rented. Soon, they meet Casey, the young gardener, Churchie, the friendly cook, and Jeffrey, the son of the snooty Mrs Tifton, the owner of Arundel. They soon learn that Jeffrey needs to be saved from boredom, and they learn of his mother's plot to pack him off to military school. Can the Penderwicks save him?
