Shug

Jenny Han (2007), 256 pages
Audience: 6th Grade - 8th Grade
Annemarie Wilcox, Shug, is your average 12-year-old girl. Her mother is beautiful, and her sister is the prettiest girl in town. Shug has freckles, is taller than everyone else, and is flat-chested. This year she wants things to be different, but she does not know just how different junior high can be. For example, Mark has always been her closest friend but now she feels strange when he is around. She actually thinks that she loves him, and it's not just puppy love. But on the first day of junior high, Mark fails to show up at her door so they can walk together to the bus stop as they have done every school morning since the beginning of time. The school dance makes everything worse. How could he kiss another girl? Then there is Jack. Jack has always been annoying and insulting. Now her grade is dependant on how well she can tutor him in English. Their relationship changes as her life changes. Her parents are fighting, and she thinks they are on the verge of a divorce. The only person who seems to understand the situation is Jack. Could he be her first kiss?
