In 1964, right before the start of sixth grade, Alice Ann's family moves from Chicago to Jackson, Mississippi. Alice has never had trouble 'fitting in' when joining a new school and is happy when she finds out she won't be the only newcomer. However, another student is Valerie Taylor, the first black student in an all white school as a result of a mandatory integration law. Alice wants so badly to fit in, and she just can't understand the attitude of her fellow students against the new girl. Soon she learns that in order to be accepted she'll have to take part in schemes to harass and hurt Valerie. How far will she go to gain popularity ' or will she follow her conscience? This is a great historic read!
