In 1964, right before the start of sixth grade, Alice Ann's family moves from Chicago to Jackson, Mississippi.� Alice has never had trouble 'fitting in' when joining a new school and is happy when she finds out she won't be the only newcomer.� However, another student is Valerie Taylor, the first black student in an all white school as a result of a mandatory integration law.� Alice wants so badly to fit in, and she just can't understand the attitude of her fellow students against the new girl.
