In the Philadelphia of 1793; sixteen-year-old Matilda Cook lives with her mother and grandfather. When the yellow fever epidemic strikes, she flees the city with her grandfather, leaving her ailing mother behind. They are forced to cope with the horrors of the yellow fever epidemic. Matilda learns about strength, perseverance, and self-reliance, especially after her grandfather's death.
