To keep him safe, Nick's mother sends him off to Burma, to live with his father on the family's teak plantation. Nick is intrigued by Burma and especially by the timber elephants on the plantation. Intrigue is soon taken over by fear, as Nick's father is taken prisoner by Japanese solders. Nick becomes a servant to the Japanese and wonders what will become of him and his father.
